Our Inspiration
Nestled along the northeastern coast, Plum Island has always been more than just a place—it’s a feeling, a way of life, and the heart of our family’s inspiration. For generations, we’ve lived and breathed the salty air, watched the waves roll in on its quiet shores, and shared countless moments in its beloved local spots. Each of our candles is a tribute to the cherished memories made on this island, where life moves a little slower, and the beauty of nature reminds us of what matters most.
Our story begins with our grandparents, Bette and Joe Burns, who established deep roots on Plum Island. Their love for the island and its tranquil beauty inspired our family to embrace the simple joys of coastal living. From weekend barbecues on the beach to cozy family gatherings at home, Bette and Joe instilled in us a deep appreciation for the island’s charm and the importance of connection—both to family and to nature.
From the morning light dancing on the sands to the fiery sunsets that signal the end of another perfect day, Plum Island’s beaches are at the core of everything we create. Our candles capture the essence of these peaceful shores, the scent of ocean breezes mixed with the earthy notes of sea grasses and driftwood. They are meant to bring the same calm and serenity into your home that we’ve found here for generations.
Plum Island isn’t just its natural beauty—it’s a community rich with history and tradition. The Bette Marie Restaurant, though now closed, holds a special place in the heart of the island’s story. For years, it was a hub where locals gathered, enjoying fresh seafood and home-cooked meals with family and friends. The warmth and community spirit that Bette Marie embodied are what we aim to bring into each candle we pour—a reminder of shared moments and the comfort of home.
No visit to Plum Island was complete without a stop at the Plum Island Airport, a small but vibrant local airstrip that has been a part of the island’s history since the early 1900s. It served as a gateway for visitors and a reminder of the island’s connection to the larger world, yet still rooted in the quiet charm of coastal life. This sense of nostalgia for simpler, adventurous times is captured in our candles, evoking the freedom and excitement of life by the shore.
And of course, there’s the famous Plum Island Lighthouse, standing tall as a beacon of both safety and history. For centuries, the lighthouse has guided sailors home, a symbol of resilience and hope. We’ve crafted a special candle inspired by the lighthouse, with a fresh, bright scent of sea breeze and clean citrus, perfect for lighting when you need a little clarity or peace.
At the northern tip of the island, the Point continues to offer a quiet refuge, where the sound of the waves and the calling of the gulls create a haven for those looking for peace and reflection. The Point is where the island’s natural beauty is at its most raw and breathtaking. Our candles capture this place’s spirit—a blend of ocean air, wild flora, and a reminder of endless possibilities.
Of course, no story of Plum Island would be complete without the iconic Pink House, a symbol of mystery and resilience, standing proudly on the edge of the salt marshes. Like our candles, it embodies the connection between past and present, between stories untold and memories cherished. The Pink House has inspired one of our favorite candles—a blend of soft florals, warm earth, and a touch of coastal mystery, evoking the nostalgia and wonder of this timeless landmark.
Each candle we create is our way of sharing a little piece of Plum Island’s story with you. From our grandparents’ roots to the beloved landmarks that shaped our childhood, our candles are infused with the essence of a place that has shaped our family for generations. With every flicker of light and every scent released, we hope to bring the magic of Plum Island into your home, keeping its spirit alive for years to come.
